Home Island County Freeland
Emergency Plumber in Freeland, WA
Freeland has a water district but no public sewer, and that shapes plumbing here. Pyper Plumbing is on call 24/7 for the leaks and clogs that can't wait.
Here is the surprising thing about Freeland: it is the only urban growth area in all of Island County, and it still has no public sewer system. The water district looked at building one for more than a dozen years before dropping the idea in 2019.
So in Freeland, most homes and businesses handle their own wastewater. That changes how we think about a slow drain or a backed-up toilet. Pyper Plumbing offers 24/7 emergency repair for your house plumbing, and we are upfront when the real problem sits at a tank or drainfield, because we do not service those.

Plumbing in Freeland: what to know
Water district, but no sewer
Freeland is served by the Freeland Water and Sewer District, though the sewer part never got built. The district shelved its plans in 2019 after spending more than a dozen years and over 1.8 million dollars in state funds on studies. Cost was one problem, and finding a place to send treated water was the other. Bottom line for you: your house drain most likely leads to a private septic system, not a city main.
Why sewer is so hard here
County staff reported that one proposed disposal site had drainage problems, injection wells carried a high risk of failure, and Holmes Harbor's water is not clean enough to support a treated-water outfall. The groundwater also has high nitrogen, which makes septic treatment costlier. Options still on the table include working with the Holmes Harbor Sewer District. Until something changes, protect your septic by keeping grease, wipes, and heavy chemicals out of your drains.
Holmes Harbor and Harbor Hills
The Harbor Hills system serves the Holmes Harbor community, separate from the Freeland district. If you live near the harbor, ask which system serves you before a repair so we know whether a pressure or water-quality issue starts at the meter or in your house.
Wind, power, and water
Freeland sits on South Whidbey, where a December 2025 windstorm sent gusts up to 71 miles per hour and knocked out power to about 25,000 Whidbey customers, especially on the south end. Systems that use pumps, including home wells and sump pumps, need electricity. After storms, check for leaks from loosened fittings, and turn off the water at your main if you see pooling. We can help with leaks, heaters, and fixtures once the lights are back.

Freeland plumbing questions
Does Freeland have public sewer?
No. As of the county's 2025 discussion, Freeland has no public sewer system. The water and sewer district dropped its plans in 2019, and the county has kept studying options. Most properties use septic systems, which we do not service, though we do work on the plumbing in your home.
What should I keep out of my drains if I'm on septic?
Skip grease, wipes marketed as flushable, paint, and harsh chemicals. They clog lines and upset the tank. If a toilet or drain backs up, call us to check the house side, and call a septic pro if the tank looks full or failing.
Who provides water in Freeland?
Much of the Freeland area is served by the Freeland Water and Sewer District, and the Holmes Harbor community has its own system. Some homes use private wells. Check your water bill or ask the district. It helps us find the cause when pressure or quality changes.
