Local know-how

What plumbing is like in Skagit County

A river valley that floods

The Skagit River has flooded the valley many times, and the record was broken in December 2025 when it crested at 37.73 feet in Mount Vernon. Evacuation orders reached about 78,000 people across the floodplain. After water drops, homes can be left with soggy crawl spaces, damaged water heaters and drains that run slow. If your place took on water, a plumber should look at it before you trust it again.

Water that comes from a few big systems

Much of the county's tap water starts in one of two places. Skagit PUD pipes water from a protected watershed near Clear Lake into Judy Reservoir, and it supplies most of the water for Mount Vernon, Burlington and Sedro-Woolley. The City of Anacortes treats river water at a plant near Mount Vernon and sells it to many others, including La Conner. Knowing your supplier helps when you chase pressure or water-quality questions.

Cities run the sewers

In Skagit County, sewer service comes from individual cities and towns rather than one countywide agency. That means who to call about a main-line problem depends on where you live. As a general rule, the city looks after the main in the street and you look after the pipe between your house and that main. If you are not sure where the line is yours, we can help you figure it out.

Questions about Skagit County

Do you offer emergency plumbing anywhere in Skagit County?

Pyper Plumbing serves Skagit County, including the cities listed on this page and nearby smaller communities. Our main focus is 24/7 emergency repair, so call any time. When you call, we will confirm we can reach your address and tell you what to expect.

My home flooded. Should I use my plumbing right away?

Hold off if you can. Floodwater may be contaminated and can damage water heaters, drains and fixtures. Shut off the main water valve if it is safe to reach, stay out of standing water near electrical items, and call a plumber to check things before you go back to normal use.

How do I know if my sewer line is my responsibility?

In most cases the city owns the main under the street, and you are responsible for the pipe from your home to that main. Rules differ by town, so check with your city if you are unsure. A camera inspection can show where a clog or break sits, which makes the question easier to answer.
