Emergency Plumbing on Whidbey and Camano Island
Island plumbing is its own thing: wells, septic, salt water, and a ferry or bridge between you and help. Pyper Plumbing is ready 24/7 when a pipe lets go.
Island County is two islands, Whidbey and Camano, and the homes on them get water in very different ways. Oak Harbor runs on piped water from the Skagit River. Most other homes depend on groundwater from wells or small shared water systems. That mix shapes almost every plumbing call, from hard-water scale to a pump that quits when the power does.
Pyper Plumbing handles emergency repair for homes and small businesses across the county: burst pipes, water heater failures, stubborn drains, toilets, and leaks you cannot find. We do not install or service septic tanks or well pumps, but we will tell you straight when a problem starts there instead of in your house plumbing.
Local know-how
What plumbing is like in Island County
One aquifer, lots of wells
Both islands sit on what the federal government calls a sole-source aquifer, which means groundwater is the only local supply. County staff reported in 2025 that roughly 7,600 individual household wells operate in Island County, plus about 600 small Group B systems and 600 two-party systems. About 72 percent of residents rely on groundwater. For you, that means your water quality is your own business: minerals, scale, and sometimes salt can show up in fixtures, heaters, and dishwashers.
Salt water at the edges
The county's main water-supply worry is seawater creeping into wells that sit close to sea level. County staff have pointed to areas around Ebey's Landing, West Beach, Greenbank, and Mutiny Bay. Salty or odd-tasting well water is a job for a well professional, but the damage it does to faucets, heaters, and fittings is something we see and fix.
Septic is the norm, and weather is rough
About 72 percent of county residents also use septic systems, so a slow drain can be a house-pipe problem or a tank problem, and the fix is different. Wind adds its own trouble. A December 2025 windstorm knocked out power to about 25,000 Whidbey customers, and a home on a well loses water pressure when the power goes out. Keep a plan for outages, and know where your main shutoff is.

Learn moreQuestions about Island County
Does Pyper work on septic tanks or well pumps?
No. We do not install or service septic tanks or well pumps. We do fix the plumbing inside your home, including drains, toilets, water heaters, and the line running from the house. If we find the problem is at the tank or pump, we will say so and point you the right way.
Do you offer emergency plumbing on Whidbey and Camano Island?
Yes. Emergency repair is our main focus, and we take calls around the clock. Island trips can take longer than a mainland call, so call early and shut off your water at the main while you wait.
Why is my island well water leaving scale on everything?
Groundwater on the islands carries minerals, and in Coupeville the town itself describes its water as hard. Scale builds up inside water heaters and on faucets over time. We can check your heater and fixtures and talk through your options.
